What are West indian Drywood Termites (WIDT)

West Indian Drywood Termite

What are West Indian Drywood Termites? (Cryptotermes Brevis)

West Indian Drywood Termites (Cryptotermes brevis) are an introduced species of termite known for infesting dry, untreated wood, often in furniture, structural timbers, and wooden fixtures. It is an extremely destructive pest and can be difficlut to detect. Unlike subterranean termites, they don’t require contact with soil, making them particularly damaging in homes and buildings.  Over time, they can cause significant structural damage, hollowing out wooden beams and furniture, weakening the integrity of the wood from the inside. Regular inspections and professional treatment are crucial to prevent severe damage.

How to Identify West Indian Drywood Termites (Cryptotermes Brevis)

West Indian Drywood Termites are typically smaller, with bodies ranging from light cream to dark brown. Their heads are usually darker, and they have larger mandibles compared to subterranean termites. Unlike subterranean termites, drywood termites do not have workers; instead, their colonies consist of soldiers and reproductive swarmers. The swarmers (alates) have wings with a slightly smoky tint and distinct veins visible on the wings.

At Fumax, we specialize in West Indian Drywood Termite (WIDT) inspections and treatments. Unlike the more common subterranean termites, WIDT do not require contact with the ground, making their infestations harder to detect and more damaging over time. As a result, WIDT inspections require aspecialized process and a trained eye to spot the subtle signs of an infestation.

Our team at Fumax is experienced in identifying and treating WIDT in a wide range of environments. We service all of Australia, ensuring that homes and businesses are protected from this invasive and destructive pest. Trust Fumax for thorough inspections and professional treatments that safeguard your property against West Indian Drywood Termites. How to Identify West Indian Drywood Termite Frass/Damage

  • Identification of Infestations: Frass, or termite droppings, can be a critical clue in revealing the location of West Indian Drywood Termite (WIDT) infestations. By examining frass Fumax can assess the extent of the infestation and determine the specific species involved, aiding in the selection of appropriate treatment methods.
  • Unique Structure: The frass produced by WIDT is hexagonal in cross-section, characterized by one rounded end and one tapered end. This distinctive shape helps differentiate it from droppings of other pest species, making it easier to identify the presence of these termites.
  • Color Changes: Frass from hoop pine, a common wood infested by WIDT, typically appears reddish-brown when freshly produced. Over time, this coloration gradually darkens, turning black as it ages. This color change can serve as an additional indicator of how long the infestation has been present.
  • Size Comparison: The frass of West Indian Drywood Termites is generally larger and more pointed than that produced by the native drywood termite (C. primus). This size difference can assist pest control experts in identifying the specific termite species and assessing the potential severity of the infestation.
  • Distinguishing from Ant Debris: It is essential to distinguish termite frass from ant debris, as the two can be confused. Unlike frass, ant debris often contains fibers or parts of dead insects. Pest control professionals can identify the differences in composition to confirm the presence of termites.
  • Signs on Timber: In close proximity to the frass pile, the infested timber may show small exit holes, typically around 1mm in diameter. However, these holes can sometimes be sealed by the termites, making them difficult to see. Careful inspection of the area is necessary to detect these subtle signs of infestation.

Key Points to Remember

  • Introduced species: West Indian Drywood Termites (Cryptotermes brevis) are not native to Australia.
  • Infestation areas: Commonly infest dry, untreated wood such as furniture, structural timbers, and wooden fixtures.
  • No soil contact needed: Unlike subterranean termites, they do not require contact with soil, allowing them to infest wood directly in homes.
  • Difficult to detect: Infestations can be hard to identify as they live inside the wood.
  • Highly destructive: Known as a major pest due to their ability to cause extensive damage to structures by hollowing out wooden beams.
  • Widespread in urban areas: Typically found in coastal and urban regions of Australia.
  • Threat to buildings: Can weaken the structural integrity of homes and buildings.
  • Management required: Regular inspections and professional pest control are critical to prevent and manage infestations.
  • Regulated pest: Considered a regulated pest in Australia due to the potential for widespread damage.
